For students who are interested in both the Nurse Anesthesia and Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP) specializations, the School of Nursing offers a 96 credit, hybrid specialization Post-Baccalaureate to Doctor of Nursing Practice program that can be completed in 36 months. The School of Nursing offers a hybrid, 18-credit, Post-Graduate Certificate in Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP) for nurses with a master’s degree who wish to obtain certification to provide care for adult patients at all stages of the lifespan with chronic, complex, or critical health conditions.
Each applicant will have an individual gap analysis completed to develop an individualized plan of study. The actual total credit hours assigned to the plan of study will be dependent upon previously completed coursework. The minimum number of credits to be completed at Loyola is 9. Students must complete all theory and clinical requirements for the population focus, including a minimum of 500 supervised hours in direct patient care. Practicum experiences are completed with preceptors in practice settings located in the geographic areas in which the student resides. Course delivery includes in-person (IP) and online asynchronous (OA) teaching methods.

The School of Nursing offers an online, asynchronous 24-33 credit, Post-Graduate Certificate in Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), for nurses with a master’s degree who wish to obtain certification to provide primary care to families throughout the lifespan.
Applicants will have an individual gap analysis completed to develop an individualized plan of study. The actual total credit hours assigned to the plan of study will be dependent upon previously completed coursework. The minimum number of credits to be completed at Loyola is 24. Post-Graduate Certificate - Nurse-Midwifery
The School of Nursing offers a 29-41 credit, hybrid Post-Graduate Certificate in Nurse-Midwifery for nurses with a master’s degree who wish to obtain certification to provide obstetrical and primary care to women throughout the lifespan. Course delivery includes in-person (IP) and online asynchronous (OA) teaching methods.
Applicants will have an individual gap analysis completed by the Nurse-Midwifery Program Director to develop an individualized plan of study. The actual total credit hours assigned to the plan of study will be dependent upon previously completed coursework. The minimum number of credits to be completed at Loyola is 29. Students must complete all didactic and clinical requirements for the population focus, including a minimum of 910 supervised hours in direct patient care. Practicum experiences are completed with preceptors in practice settings located in the geographic areas in which the student resides.

Admissions Requirements for All Graduate Nursing Programs
- A completed application to the program
- Official transcripts from each degree-granting college or university attended
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing from an accredited school of nursing
- Copies of current, unencumbered RN License and advanced practice license (if applicable) in the state in which all clinical practicums for the program will occur; APRN certification (if applicable). Specific programs require students to obtain and maintain a Louisiana Registered Nursing license or a multistate nursing license while enrolled in the program.
- Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on earned coursework
- Minimum of one year’s full-time work experience
- Letters of recommendation
A deposit will be required when a student accepts an offer of admission to the program. This deposit will be applied to the tuition bill after the final drop/add period in the second semester. The deposit will not be refunded for any reason should the applicant subsequently not enroll in the semester authorized for admission.
Registered Nurse License
Upon entering any graduate level nursing program, each student must submit proof of a current, unencumbered, unrestricted, valid, and without disciplinary action, registered nurse license in the state in which they practice. Students are required to maintain current licensure. If, at any point during the program, a student’s RN license becomes encumbered, restricted, has disciplinary action, requires enrollment in an alternative discipline program, or expires, the student is required to immediately inform the respective Program Director and Director of the School of Nursing. Any student with an encumbrance, restriction, or disciplinary action on their license will not be permitted to enroll in a course with a practicum component except with the permission of the Director of the School of Nursing after individual review. All students will be required to obtain an RN license in any state in which they plan to do practicum if they do not already have such licensure.
Students in the Nurse Anesthesia Program and Dual Specialization Program are also governed by regulations itemized in the Nurse Anesthesia Supplemental Handbook.

Additional BSN to DNP - Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Admission Requirements
In addition to the admission requirements for all graduate nursing programs, the BSN to DNP - Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP) program admission requirements include:
- Current, unencumbered registered nurse licensure in any of the United States is required and must be submitted with the application.
- A minimum of one year (at the time of application) of full-time, recent work experience as a Registered Nurse in a critical care setting with demonstrated proficiency in managing critically ill patients.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS), and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) certification.
- At least two letters of recommendation from professional colleagues in a leadership role from the critical care setting, addressing the applicant's critical thinking skills, experience, and potential success in the AGACNP program.
- Selected applicants will be invited to participate in on-campus or Zoom interviews.
- A personal statement, limited to one page, detailing how the applicant envisions the AGACNP certification will impact their career trajectory.
- CV/Resume, including specific dates of all acute care and other nursing experience, and extra-curricular activities/accomplishments.

In addition to the admission requirements for all graduate nursing programs, the BSN to DNP - Nurse Anesthesia program admission requirements include:
- Current, unencumbered registered nurse licensure in any of the United States is required and must be submitted with the application. Licensure in Louisiana or a multistate nursing license will be required prior to the second semester of study.
- A minimum of one year (at the time of application) of full-time, current work experience as a Registered Nurse in a critical care setting with demonstrated proficiency in managing critically ill patients, machine ventilation, invasive hemodynamic monitoring, vasoactive IV infusions, and aggressive fluid management.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) certification.
- At least two letters of recommendation from professional colleagues in a leadership role from the critical care setting, addressing the applicant's critical thinking skills, experience, and potential success in the Nurse Anesthesia program.
- Selected applicants will be invited to participate in on-campus interviews, which will be scheduled during the fall. A Supplemental Application for Admission to the Nurse Anesthesia program, including an attestation of prior enrollment in a Nurse Anesthesia program, will be required at the time of the interview. Candidates will also participate in a short assessment tool and knowledge evaluation during the interview process.
- A writing sample, limited to one page, detailing the applicant's journey thus far, and predicted path forward, should they be accepted to the Loyola University New Orleans Nurse Anesthesia program.
- CV/Resume, including specific dates of all critical care and other nursing experience, CRNA shadowing information, and extra-curricular activities/accomplishments.

- Current, unencumbered registered nurse licensure in any of the United States is required and must be submitted with the application. Licensure in Louisiana or a multistate nursing license will be required prior to the second semester of study.
- A minimum of one year (by the time the applicant would register for the first clinical course) of full-time, current work experience as a Registered Nurse as a labor and delivery nurse or other birth-related work.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- One letter of recommendation from persons knowledgeable about the applicant's aptitude for graduate study, such as former professors.
- Selected applicants will be invited to participate in on-campus/virtual interviews, which will be scheduled during the fall and winter.
- A Personal statement, limited to one page, describing the applicant's nursing experience and career goals.
- CV/Resume, including specific dates of all labor and delivery, and other nursing experience, and extra-curricular activities/accomplishments.

Other Requirements for All Graduate Students After Admission
Upon admission into the program and within at least 60 days of enrollment, all students regardless of program of study are required to apply for a certified background review, and drug screen/test at their own expense, as directed by invitation from a third-party vendor contracted by the School of Nursing. All results are reported to Loyola University New Orleans School of Nursing. Students must be fully compliant with all items through the entire program, including:
- Background Check
- Physical Exam - within the past 12 months
- Urine Drug screen/test
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider (must be in accordance with American Heart Association or American Red Cross guidelines)
- Health Insurance Coverage
- Immunizations
- Measles (2 doses)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Tetanus, Diptheria, Pertussis
- Polio
- Influenza - annually
- Varicella (Chicken Pox)
- Hepatitis B
- COVID-19 - as per CDC guidelines
- Tuberculosis testing annually or risk assessment as per CDC and practicum site guidelines

Length of Time to Complete Program
Students are required to complete any graduate nursing program within 5 years of enrolling in course work. Students who find it necessary to drop out of school for a period of time must request a formal leave of absence and complete the relevant paperwork. An approved Leave of Absence form guarantees the student the right to return to the program within one year, after which the formal leave expires. The approved Leave of Absence for one year is included in the 5 year requirement. The student will work with the Academic Advisor and/or Program Director to develop an alternate plan of study to accommodate the curriculum in effect at the time of reentry. If a student’s progression plan indicates the student will fail to complete any graduate nursing program within 5 years, the student will be academically dismissed from the program.

Minimal Acceptable Grade
The minimum acceptable grade in a graduate nursing course taken at Loyola University New Orleans is a B- (80%). A student whose cumulative grade point average falls below 3.0 will be placed on academic probation. A student on academic probation has semesters (fall, spring or summer semester) to bring the GPA back to 3.0 or above. Pass/Fail courses do not count towards students’ GPA. If the academic probation is not removed in the allotted time, the student will not be allowed to continue in the program. There are four conditions in which a student will be academically dismissed from a program:
- Any student receiving a grade of F in any theory (non-practicum) course
- The need to repeat a single course for a third time in the student’s program of study
- The need to repeat more than two courses in the student’s program of study
- Failure to increase GPA above 3.0 after two semesters of academic probation

Practicum & Affiliation Agreement Requirements
In order for nursing students in any Loyola nursing program to begin practicum, there must be a valid Affiliation Agreement in place between Loyola University New Orleans and the practicum site. The Loyola Affiliation Agreement form is used by Loyola University New Orleans' School of Nursing in contracting with third-party facilities to offer students nursing experience in real-world healthcare programs. However, healthcare organizations may require use of their own affiliation agreement form. The agreement establishes the relationship between the university and the facility in coordinating the program. Nursing students may not begin their practicum until the Affiliation Agreement has been signed by all required parties at both facilities. Failure to comply will result in the forfeiture of all clinical hours completed prior to the acceptance of the affiliation agreement and may result in having to repeat the course.

Professional Liability
The University maintains a malpractice insurance policy covering all nursing students during their student clinical practicum hours in a University pre-approved clinical facility or other practice setting. The policy does not cover professional working hours outside of those being completed as a Loyola University New Orleans School of Nursing student.
